Beyond the Basics: Introduction to Two-Color Stranded Knitting

What You Will Learn in 3 Hours

  • Holding Two Yarns: Discover different methods for holding two contrasting colors and find the style that works best for you (e.g., in one hand, or one in each hand).

  • Reading a Colorwork Chart: Learn to follow a simple chart to create a repeating winter pattern (like snowflakes, dots, or small peaks).

  • The Power of Floats: Understand what floats are (the yarn carried across the back of the work) and, most importantly, how to maintain even tension to prevent puckering.

  • Color Dominance: Learn the simple trick to make your pattern color pop against the background.

  • Seamless Color Change: Review the technique for a clean transition when changing colors at the start of a new round.

Project Details:

  • Project: A beginner-friendly, seamless Two-Color Tube Scarf.

  • Technique: Introduction to simple stranded colorwork (Fair Isle).

 *Supplies:
  • Needle Type: 16-inch (40 cm) Circular Needles.

  • Needle Size: US 7 (4.5 mm) OR whatever size is needed to achieve a smooth fabric with your chosen yarn. If your gauge is generally tight, consider bringing a US 8 (5.0 mm) as colorwork tends to tighten your gauge.

  • Stitch Markers: One distinctive marker for the Beginning of Round (BOR) and at least one other for a pattern repeat, if needed.

  • Darning/Tapestry Needle: For weaving in the yarn tails at the end.

  • Small Scissors: For snipping yarn ends.

  • Copy of the Pattern/Chart: The class pattern/chart (provided by the instructor).

  • Optional Tool: A Knitting Thimble/Ring (also called a Stranded Colorwork Guide) is highly recommended if you struggle with holding two yarns in one hand.

  • *all students will receive a 10% discount on supplies at Heart2Heart Knitting & Fiber Arts
